This 19th-century huntsman was a “consummate horseman” and played a considerable part in making the Quorn the most famous pack in the world

TOM FIRR’S lengthy tenure at the Quorn (1872–1899) made him one of the most famous huntsmen ever to have lived, in an era when great hunts were written up in the newspapers and the sport’s practitioners were icons.

“HE was very quick, but never in a hurry, very quiet, yet had a beautiful voice – his cheer always put life into a pack,” Otho Paget wrote about Tom Firr in Memories of the Shires. “Although he may have started with one or two couples only, every hound would be there before they were out of the first field.”
