DO YOU remember that classic BBC comedy show The Good Life? Every week Tom and Barbara Good (played brilliantly by Richard Briers and Felicity Kendal) brought suburban crop growing, chicken-keeping and pig-rearing to our TV screens as they tried to escape the rat race.
The series was an instant hit, but it was also the first time most people had come across the phrase ‘self-sufficiency’. We laughed when the Goods ploughed their back garden, slipped over in the mud and struggled with their sows, but today self-sufficiency has taken on another, more serious meaning. Now we’re more likely to hear it used in relation to food security and the ability of the nation to feed itself.
