Magster note for Kalachuvadu October issue

The editorial is a detailed analysis of Sanatana Dharma debate. It questions the genuineness of the advocates of Sanatana Dharma in eradicating the inequalities of Hinduism. Senior writer P.A. Krishnan traces the various explanations and definitions of Sanatana Dharma through ages.

Short stories by Perumal Murugan and Malacia Srisanthan and poems by Lavanya Sundarrajan and Pa. Raja have been featured in literary pages.

A special section on eminent writer Sundara Ramaswamy on the eve of his 18th death anniversary carries his letters and an analytical article by Aravindan on Su.Ra.’s novel Kuzhanthaigal Pengal Aangal.

Kalachuvadu January 2024 Special issue

The issue has two Special Sections:

1. Tamil and other languages: Native speakers of other languages have been making valuable contributions to Tamil. This section carries a couple of articles on this phenomenon and a few profiles of writers and publishers who belong to this category.

2. The tragic story of Gaza: This section looks deep into the tragedies of the Palestinian people. It contains articles and poems on the issue.

The issue has two editorials. One is a detailed and in-depth analysis of the recent state elections and the other one is on Sahitya Academy Award.

The issue carries an elaborate interview of renowned historian Nayanjot Lahiri by Maruthan Gangatharan.

An article deals with the causes and solutions of heavy rains and floods in Tamil Nadu.

Critical analysis of Australian cricket team’s success formula.

Renowned musician T.M. Krishna writes about Perumal Murugan who has won the JCB award for this year.

Short stories of Vasanthi and Perumal Murugan have been carried.

The debate section has a couple of critical responses to the articles published in the last issue on Periyar and Rajaji.

The December 2023 issue has two editorials. One is about how the book fairs are conducted at the district level. The second editorial questions the rationale behind not wishing people for festivals like Deepavali. The editorial highlights the inner contradictions of politicians’ approach.

A conversation with veteran writer and scholar Seeni Viswanathan, who has contributed enormously to the field of Bharathi’s works.

Lavanya Sundararajan has made a comparative study of three recently released Tamil novels (Neduneram by Perumal Murugan, Adaikum Thal by Salma, and Nizhal Nathy by Kalanthai Peer Mohammed). Lavanya looks deep into the way love is handled in these novels that revolve around the issue of love. 

Poems, book reviews and regular columns add value to the content of the issue.

Renowned historian and writer Ramachandra Guha’s extensive interview has been featured as a cover story. This is the first time that a Tamil magazine carries his elaborate interview.
The issue has two editorials. One is on the lack of government action on the commission report on Tutukkudi firing that took place a few years ago. The second editorial speaks about the police action against selling a couple of books in a book fair.
Two articles have been carried on Nanguneri violence against Dalit students. The article analysis the socio political factors behind such actions and reactions.
A new story of veteran writer G. Alagirisamy has been found and published in this issue. Aravindan’s story on a sports person has also been published. The issue has also carried Clarice Lispector’s story.

The issue has carried a follow up story to the previous issue’s cover story on sexual violence in literary and arts circle by publishing an anonymous letter by a girl who claims to have been sexually abused by a theatre person. ParthibaRaja, mentioned in the previous issue as one of the sexual abusers, has written a denial letter. Kalachuvadu has published it in full and responded to the queries he has raised. 
The editorial analyses the pros and cons of eradicating the exclusive schools for SC/ST students in Tamil Nadu.
Tho. Pathinathan, Sri Lankan Tamil writer has written an article on TN court verdicts vis-à-vis Sri Lankan Tamil refugees. 
The issue has reproduced an old interview of G. Alagirisamy, one of the pioneers in  modern Tamil literature. This year is the centenary year of the writer.
P. Kamalakkannan, PhD student in JNU, has written a profile on George L Hart in the series that pays tribute to the outstanding octogenarian contributors to Tamil culture and language octogenarians.
Asi. Kantharaja from Australia and Srikanthan from Malaysia have written short stories in this issue.

The special focus of the April 2023 issue is the issue surrounding the accusations of sexual abuse by a writer. The section carries analytical articles by Aravindan and Senthuran and interviews with the victims. The section elaborately discusses various aspects of the matter.

K C Magzter Note for Issue 279
AI is at the center of debate in literary circle too. The day may not be too far when AI starts writing fictions and literary critique. Karthik Ramachandran explores the possible developments in the literary arena and analyses the fear of AI making the writers redundant. 
Vengai Vayal, a small village in Pudukkottai district, has shocked everyone by humiliating Dalit residents in an unimaginable way. Dalit historian and political critic Stalin Rajangam points out that Vengai Vayal incident is not new to the district in his critical essay on the incident. He draws the attention of the readers on the wide spread trend of toxic casteism and calls for a larger debate on such issues.  
Writer B. Venkatesan analyses the impact of colonial approach towards oriental life in the backdrop of Devibharathi’s recent novel Noyyal. Aravindan analyses the creative world of writer Imayam and explores how the writer gets into the skins of his characters.

January is the month of Tamil books. Chennai book fair, the biggest event in writing circle, happens in January every year. It is but natural that the February issue reflects upon the book fair in its editorial. A special section of visuals shows the vibrant activities in Kalachuvadu stall in the fair.
Sahitya Academy Award (for translation) winner Nallathambi speaks about his perceptions and experiences on translation in his conversation with senior writer Paavannan. 
The conversation between Ki. Rajanarayanan and Vallikkannan on G. Azhagirisamy throws light on the writings and personality of G. Azhagirisamy. The insightful conversation was broadcasted in AIR 44 years ago. The transcription of the same is published for the first time thanks to the efforts of writer Pazha Athiyaman. It gains more importance as this is the centenary year of legendary G. Azhagirisamy.
Yuvan Chandrasekar analyses Sureshkumara Indrajith’s short stories in detail. This well written article dwells deep into the fictional world of Sureshkumara Indrajith. 
A translation story (from Sinhalese) and the one by Santhan have been published in this issue. Poems by Regi Sirivardhane and Anar add colour to the literary pages. 
Renowned linguistic scholar and writer Professor S. Rajaram’s contributions have been traced in an article by Ira. Araventhan. This is a part of Kalachuvadu’s 80 + series which pays tribute to the living legends of Tamil cultural scenario.

The ever honoured and ever criticised personality would be none other than Mahatma Gandhi. After a century had passed since his demise he remains immortal. This is the notion behind to bring Gandhi a subject of new discussions. The writers and activist born after Gandhi see him with different perspectives. In this issue the special section devoted for this contains articles by Suneel Krishnan, T Kannan, Chira Balasubramaniam, Balasubramanian Ponraj, Aravindan Kanniyan and Suresh Pradeep. It is the season of reading in Tamilnadu as the Chennai Book fair happens in this month . This issue focuses on the new books and new book culture. Aazhi Senthilnathan in his extensive interview speaks to Aravindan about the impact and result  of AI in the Tamil milieu. Sudarvizhi writes on the contributions of A R Venkatachalapathy to the Bharati iyal. Four short stories published here unexpectedly track the progress of Tamil fiction thru generations. The writers are Ku Alagirisamy, Vannanilavan, S Senthilkumar and Amutha Aarthi who belong to different generations.

Satchidanandan Sugirtharaja from London probes into the real things in his article . K Thirunavukkarasu writes on the recent verdict of Supreme court of India about the economic based reservation . S R Krishnamurthy the celebrated translator who translates from French to Tamil and vice versa has been interviewed by D I Aravindan. Sri Lankan Tamil writer Thelivathai Joseph,Tamil writers and activists P Jayaprakasam and Vizhi Pa Idhyavendan, scholer Kasuman and Malayalam poet T P Rajeevan remembered in the tributes paid to them.Kumaranandan's short fiction, Sivasankar's poem and articles by Stalin Rajangam, G Gurusamy and Y Manikandan make the literary section a not to miss item. In the 80 + section Vasanthi Devi , well known educationist and formal vice chancellor is remembered by Manikumar.

Hijab, the attire for muslim women became a controversial stuff for the fundamentalists in Iran and the basics for the revolt there. The reciprocation dashes in other parts of the globe. Sharmila Seyyid and Peer Mohammed write on the matter in detail.  M Ramanathan writes on the latest developments in China's administration and politics which ought influence the status quo in Asian countries. The Nobel winner for literature Annie Ernaux is introduced by S R Krishnamurthy. Dinesh Akira in his sports article speaks  about Pakistan cricketer Babur Aslam. In the series 80 plus M Gopalakrishnan points the struggles and successes of Vijaya Velayudham a pioneer in Tamil publication. G Kuppusamy laments the tennis legend Roger Fedderer's retirement from the arena. T M C Raghunathan, pioneer in progressive literature is vividly remembered in the special section Porunai paakkangal. Yuvan Chandra sekar with his poignant short fiction and Peru Vishnukumar and Na Viswanathan with their poems  contribute to the literary section. Senthooran reviews Pa Ranjith's latest movie and Karthik Ramachandran the Short films and documentary festival held at Thiruvananthapuram. Su Ra'S letters to N Sivaraman record the literary and cultural scenario  of the last span of the last century.

This issue carries a happy note of the Editor Kannan Sundaram being conferred with the prestigious honour from the French Government , the Chevallier award first time for a Tamil publisher. Th executive  editor marks this as a glorious moment. Otogenerian Theodore Bhaskaran, pioneer in film criticism tribute by Amshankumar. The assault on the controversial writer Salman Rushdie is condemned by Perumal murugan and Sugirtharaja. Araindan writes on the recent attempts of transforming literary wworks to visual  feast in Tamil cinema . Theodore Bhaskaran writes on the national award winner RV Ramani and Rajankurai Krishanan pays homage to film critic Venkatatesh Chakravarthi who passed away last month. Y Manikandan continues his research in unknowmworks of Bharati. A Muttulingam contributes a fine short fiction.

Though the autocratic government has been toppled in Sri Lanka the fate of the citizen remains unchanged. Karunakaran describes the latest happenings in the island.
Chronic lover of books and promoter of new writing  Padmanabha Iyer being honoured by Nithyanandam in the section 80 plus. Eminent personalities Peter Brook in theatre , ooran adigal the spiritualist and Achuthan Koodallur , the modern abstract artist bid adieu to this earth and they are remembered in the obituary notes by Indira Parthasarathi, P Saravanan and Theodore Bhaskaran. Perumal murugan had been honoured with the prestigious Fakir Mohan award the Fakir Mohan university  in Odisha. It might not be a surprise if a reader smelt a feminine odour in the current issue of Kalachuvadu. Because a good number of pages are filled with female participants' contributions. All the three stories published are by woman . P Satyvathi ( Telugu ), Majitha ( Tamil ) and Luisa  Valenzuela ( Spanish ) contribute stories and Nithya her poem.

Another well known artist in Tamil , Trotsky Marudu who m Bhaskaran have been a  mentor and teacher remembers the colourful decade. Karunakaran writes on the situation in Sri Lanka, where as Satchidanandan Sugirtharaja  speaks about the Knadiraja regime in the land. T Parameswari and Umamaheswari writes on the cause and effect of the violence among school students in the recent days.  Isai, Mythili and Subramani Ramesh contribute literary articles. His views on his own world the carnatic music circle and in general on the society and culture are revolutionary and action provoking. In this interview with writer Aravindan , Krishna speaks on various things which include music,caste, religion , dalit life and feminism. Karunakaran,Tamil writer and Singaleese scholar Kamini  Wyangoda write about the crisis in Sri Lanka. Dinesh Akira pays homage to Shane Warne.  y.Manikandanbrings out new interpretation for Bharati's poetic lines through subtle research and P Sahadevan writes on the new fiction in Tamil in the cyber age. Karthic Ramachandran takes on the postmortem of this years film festival i.e.IFFK . Kalamohan and Yuvan Chandrasekar contribute short story and Kalyanaraman and P Ahilan poems.

The moral defeats of All India Congress Committee as main opposition party are discussed in the editorial of current issue of Kalachuvadu. Satchidanandan Sugirtharaja from London writes on the Ukraine war . Two more pieces on the same content are translated in to Tamil. The recent judgement of special court on the honour killings of Kannagi , Murugesan and Gokhul raj is analayed by Stalin Rajangam and J Balasubramaniam. Perumal murugan writes about two popular disciples of scholer Meenakshisundaram Pillai, those are U V Saminathayyar and Saverinatha Pillai.In the literary section an article by Subramani Ramesh on young writer Karthic Balasubramanian's work of art, stories by Zacharia and Vishal Raja, a discussion about the translation of Arundati Roy's  The Ministry of Utmost Happiness' between translators G Kuppusamy and S Devadas, poems by Lavanya Sundararajan, Sivanesan and Easter Raj wait for readers. Sivaraj Bharati reviews Kuthiraival the much talked movie in a sharp edge.

The present issue seems to a number for obituaries as so many personalities demised the land. Popular singers Sunantha and Harish Ragavendra pay homage to Lata Mangeshkar, Indira Parthasarathy remembers dramatist and techer K S Rajendran,Perumal murugan writes on Kovaivanan and Nithilam two literary enthusiasts, Santhalingam on archaelogist R Nagasamy, Stalin Rajangam pays tribute to well known folk singer Dalit Subbaiah, Rajaram remembers Tamil scholer C V Shanmugam and Ambai writer and social activist Pa Visalam. The main story is about the roar on Hijab which is analysed by Sharmila Seyyid and Kalanthai Peer Mohammed in their poignant articles. There are three stories,  one the Tamil original by Yuvan Chandrasekar and the other two are Translations of Ben Okri and Peatrice Lambhava and poems by Anand and P Raja. P Raman a Malayalam poet writes about the Tamil poems by Isai. The cover is designed by Manivannan.

Well known writer Ambai has been selected for  this year's Sahitya Akademy award . To commemorate the rare occasion of the pioneer in feminist writing  winning the award kalachuvadu publishes  two articles on Ambai's life and work respectively by J Sudarvizhi and Sharmila Seyyid. Four writers belong to different generations contribute stories for this issue, They are Vannanilavan, Perumal murugan, A S Kandarajah and M Kulasekaran. Y Manikandan in his research article on Bharati finds the truth behind the argument that Bharati did not speak about Jallianwala bagh massacre held in the British regime. Sukumaran writes about Vinod Dua the media man who passed away recently.  There is book section consists of excerpts from four forth coming books. The Pothigai pages this time devoted to M Krishnan one of the pioneer in the field of wild life and environment. The speciality in this pages are Krishnan's wildlife photographs. Stories by T Janakiraman, Edgar Karat, Ragavendra and Kanagaraj Balasubramaniam are treat for story lovers.

Though a mainstream movie , Jai Bhim' ( Tamil ) directed by T J Gnanavel has created hot waves both in the Tamil filmdom and political circles. Kalachuvadu in its editorial and review elaborately discusses the contemporary relevance of this movie. K Thirunavukkarasu writes on the end of the kisan struggle which lasted almost an year. S R Krishanamurthy introduces the mann booker award winner of the year. P Sahadevan on Feminism , Stalin Rajangam on Dalit reforms through Vaishnav sect, Abhilash on fiction and time, Sukirtharani on Safety and security of girl children and C Mohan on artist M Natesh's works are there among contributions. G Kuppusamy and Perundevi  by their short stories and Priyasamy, Anandakumar, Peru Vishnukumar, Sivanesan Raja and Vigneshkumar  by their poems contribute to this issue. Perumalmurugan and Y manikandan revisits Ku Pa Rajagopalan and Bharati. THe book excerpts of three novels are the miss not section.

Kalachuvadu Pathippagam completed its quarter century  in 2021. Since 1996 the publication serves in the field of publishing. To commemorate this a virtual celebration had been conducted with the participation of writers and well wishers from different corner othe world. The event has been covered extensively in this issue. A Muthulingam and Ponmukhali contribute short stories, Muthuvel and Veera write on cinema, Santhan and S R Krishanamurthy introduce Abdul Razak Gurnah and a group of poets present their poems.

Kalachuvadu is an international monthly journal for politics and culture. Published since 1988, it was founded by the noted Tamil writer Sundara Ramaswamy (1931-2005). Kalachuvadu was published first as a quarterly then a bi-monthly and has been a monthly since 2004.
