The Economic Survey 2015-16 says that India has the third largest base of technology start-ups in the world with over 19,400 firms. With foreign investors pumping in a whopping $8.4 billion (Rs 55,641.6 crore), 2015 has been a landmark year for the Indian startup ecosystem. The year started off on a high note with Flipkart, Ola, Snapdeal, Quikr, Zomato and Paytm crossing $1 billion in valuation. But, the pace slowed down later with many companies becoming increasingly reliant on investor money to grow business leading to layoffs. Interestingly, the year also saw industry titans like Ratan Tata, NR Narayana Murthy and global investors like Alibaba, Softbank pursuing ways to capture the market.
