Fuelling the imagination

Of all the Pacific Rim countries, it is undoubtedly Japan which has the strongest hold on our imaginations, a result of its involvement in almost every aspect of modern life and recent history — from its role in World War II to the resilience and artistry of its people, the leading role it has played in technological leaps of fantasy and advancement, and the tragedies which have played out when its fragile geography has been battered by tsunamis or shaken to its very core by earthquakes.
Architecture in contemporary Japan runs the gamut from sublimely beautiful structures both ancient and new, to complex and advanced skyscrapers designed to withstand the worst that Mother Nature can (and often does) throw at them… and everything in between.
In this month’s issue of Perspective, we take a look at a selection of projects which offer a glimpse into some of the exciting work that is going on in the Land of the Rising Sun, blending both past and present ideas and aesthetics to point the way to the future.
