The UAE aims to have 75% of Dubai’s energy come from clean resources by 2050. If the city pulls that off, it will have the smallest carbon footprint in the world. We speak to one of the men who is making it happen, planning and design manager at See Nexus, Phil Dunn, a provider of sustainable solutions and the company that have been working on Dubai’s Sustainable City. Dunn talks about what makes a sustainable community and some of the major challenges that come into play when trying to create a sustainable environment. (See page 28)
Another innovative project that we profile in this issue is in the German city of Freiburg. A new town hall building that will house 840 employees is said to be the world’s first public building that generates less energy than it consumes— a great feat for Ingenhoven architects who designed the building. (See page 34)
Back in the Middle East, we review projects such as Sidra medical centre, which has installed numerous water features throughout the clinic to help both patients and visitors relax, as well as a world class residential and tourism community development that is environmentally, socially, and economically sustainable in Egypt.
