In this issue

In this final issue of EQMM’s 75th-anniversary year, December 2016, we bring to a close a celebration that has paid tribute to the magazine’s past while attempting to incorporate the ideal of quality set forth in EQMM’s very first issue with every new story brought to the page.

Unconventional crime-solvers have their day as we say goodbye to 2016: A series police officer receives help from a supposed psychic in Richard Helms’s seriocomic procedural “Bloodstained Glass”; in a new entry in Peter Tremayne’s award-winning series set in ancient Ireland, “Catspaw,” Sister Fidelma is seen in her early years as a lawyer-in-training identifying the least likely of all suspects; and a specter supervises the investigation of his own death in Paul D. Marks’s atmospheric “Ghosts of Bunker Hill.”

The suspense tightens in Sarah Weinman’s “Dream Wedding,” in which a law-enforcement agent goes deep undercover to flush out a killer at a family celebration. The complicated tensions of family continue to drive the action in “With Eyes Like That,” the tale of an aging rock star by Robert S. Levinson, and in Tom Tolnay’s relatable “A History of Snakes,” in which a husband and wife try to revive a marriage at an Adirondack-lake retreat.

Our Passport to Crime department and the Department of First Stories both appear, featuring, in the former, a surprising visitation (“Stranger in the Night” by Belgium’s Hilde Vandermeeren) and in the latter a sly, good-hearted member of the younger generation (“The Truth of the Moment” E. Gabriel Flores).

In From the Editor’s Desk, Janet Hutchings talks about the role she hopes the magazine will continue to play in years to come. Be a part of EQMM’s future by voting in the EQMM Readers Award, the ballot contained in this issue. Thank you for celebrating with us all year—and here’s to the next 75!
