EQMM’s 75th-anniversary celebration continues with the March/April 2016 issue, in which the worlds of literary and mystery fiction are brought together between common covers. It’s our tribute to one of EQMM founding editor Frederic Dannay’s goals: “to raise the sights of mystery writers generally to a genuine literary form.” We start off with “An Error in Chemistry,” in the From Our Archives department, a tale of detection by Pulitzer Prize winner William Faulkner, first published in EQMM. Original stories from other well-known literary figures, including National Book Award winner Joyce Carol Oates follow (see her chilling “Big Momma”). You’ll recognize several other authors from the worlds of literary magazines, avante-garde fiction, essay-writing, and poetry, among them Dennis McFadden, with the darkly humorous “Tillie Dinger;” Sheila Kohler, whose story “Equality” is set amongst former schoolmates in South Africa; James Sallis, whose short-short “Dispositions” is a marvel of evocative compression; multiple International Thriller Award winner Tim L. Williams, who contributes a harrowing narrative of teenage angst (see “What We Barter, the Things We’ll Trade”); Passport to Crime’s Hilde Vandermeeren, winner of several Belgian literary awards, who delivers a penetrating psychological thriller (see “The Lighthouse”); Irish playwright and author Declan Hughes, who explores the world of literary success—and its consequences—in “Upon the Stair;” and International Latino Book Award winner John Lantigua, who provides a ripped-from-the-headlines Everglades chiller (see “The Jaguar at Sunset”).
