This is a new year, and in so many ways, it feels like a fresh start. We didn’t really get a 2020, at least in the ways we thought we would. It got us thinking about the ones we lean on, those we look to for inspiration, and that is why our Spring 2021 cover by Yusuke Hanai offers reason for hope and support. It is so clear; friends supporting each other in times of trouble. Such directness guides us in leaving the last year (or four) behind. Yusuke is a rare, humble talent who can convey truth for a collective consciousness. In what has been one of the most tumultuous years in our history, we are excited to share and announce our newest Quarterly, the Winter 2021 Issue #216.

Winter 2021 cover artist, Amani Lewis, is a brilliant emerging voice who combines so many mediums in their work that we feel like we are going through our own schooling to understand their craft. But one thing is certain: Lewis is part of a new generation of artists for whom collaboration is the lifeblood, inviting us to share their collective practice. Mr. StarCity, the NYC-based painter who has channeled infectious love and care for others into his professional vision, is on the brink of a major moment, soothing many of us along the way. Steven Sweatpants, Aurora James, Trey Abdella, Danica Lundy, Brian Calvin, Otis Kwame Kye Quaicoe, Bianca Nemelc, Maria Qamar… these are all fresh thinking artists who exemplify what a new decade will begin to look like in art. We owe it to our readers, artists, and the blueprint that was established in 1994 when Juxtapoz was created as a platform for alternative cultural voices. 2020 might be defined by the pandemic, social unrest, and a test of democracy. Created in one of the most tumultuous times in our 26 years as a print publication, Juxtapoz is excited to share our newest Quarterly edition, Summer 2020 Issue #214. For the cover story and artwork, we had Brooklyn-based painter, Kelly Beeman, premiere one of her newest watercolor works, a painting that spoke to our current global mood of both harmony, togetherness, anxiety and fear. We also share in-depth conversations Jose Parla, Felipe Pantone, Calida Rawles, Anna Weyant, Jess Johnson, Molly Bounds and Koichi Sato, as well as stories on the history of Levi's, Heath Ceramics. After Academy Award nominated films and museum retrospectives around the world, we visited JR during the install of his exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum to see what motivates one of the most energetic and prolific artists we know. Juxtapoz Magazine is proud to close out its 25th year with one of our most wide-ranging issues we have ever published! For issue Fall 2019, issue 211, we are excited to showcase a cover story on Baltimore-born, Brooklyn-based fine artist, Derrick Adams. The Fall 2019 issue feels like an ideal companion to this overarching camaraderie and authenticity. To have our founder, Robert Williams, featured for his newest works and show, alongside Derrick Adams, who has emerged over the past five years as one of the most exciting painters of his generation, is a perfect example. That Naudline Pierre and Alicia McCarthy are pages away from each other, Anna Park and Tomoo Gokita as well—it's not a passing of the baton, but finding ways to build a kinship between the generations, no matter where they are in their respective careers. As we continue to celebrate our 25th anniversary, Spring 2019 saw us looking over the pond to the "Felt Cave" to create a special cover with installation artist, painter and almost-performance artist, Lucy Sparrow. With her interactive and immersive life-sized installations, all made of felt, Sparrow has not only captivated audiences with the sheer mass and detail of what she produces for her exhibitions, but she has also created the "wow" factor and question of "what is this? What is it telling me? What is art? What is commerce?" After a photo session with Juxtapoz contributor, Ian Cox, Sparrow re-created her photo shoot as a massive Juxtapoz cover created out of felt, the final result you see on the cover of Spring 2019.

The Fall season always means the gallery world is getting back into full swing, with major highlighted shows opening in September and October. We are excited to announce our Fall 2018 issue with a cover story on Brooklyn-based, Vermont-born painter, Grace Weaver, as she opens a major solo show, BEST LIFE, at James Cohan in NYC. We sat down with Weaver at her Brooklyn studio over the course of a few sessions leading up to the show, learning about her process and ability to tell complex daily life stories within her large-format paintings. We are pleased to announce our April 2017 cover story on Brooklyn-based, Philly-born artist Timothy Curtis, aka Agua. Let's let Stephen "ESPO" Powers explain, from a few years back in Juxtapoz. . . 

“The Love letter For You movie is, in a large sense, about a guy that we know and love named Agua. He is the main inspiration and is currently incarcerated. The genesis of the film is that Agua is going to go to jail, it was only a matter of time, and I wanted to leave something out here for him to come home to.”

So here we are in 2017, and Timothy Curtis is in his artistic prime. We were in the need of some fierce but proud imagery this month, and the Los Angeles-based artist delivered with the goods. We sit down with Liu-Wong to discuss her dog, Greek mythology, and her upcoming show at Corey Helford Gallery.

The times we live in... they are a'changin. And as we kick off the new year, we look to two staples of contemporary art, Marcel Dzama and Raymond Pettibon, to illustrate the new cover of Juxtapoz's February 2017 issue. Both artists, prolific drawers with a penchant for comics and pop-culture, have been collaborating in recent years at a series of exhibitions and zines with David Zwirner Gallery, creating a body of work that not only speaks to past eras, but is reflective of the changing era that we are about to embark on. 

For the cover stories, we sit down with Marcel Dzama to discuss Pettibon as a collaborator, working with the likes of Spike Jonze, Arcade Fire, and Dave Eggers, as well as the role of the artist in politics. 

In conjunction with Raymond Pettibon's retrospective coming to the New Museum in NYC in February we enlisted critic and friend Carlo McCormick to comment on Pettibon's overall importance as both prolific and influential to a generation of artists.

Conor Harrington will say the humble thing, that he isn’t a scholar of history, but his unique fascination with the performance of diplomacy and the rituals of compromise and war have made his paintings seem uniquely of-the-moment while rendered in the tradition of figurative oil painting. This new work, titled Watch Your Palace Fall, could symbolically allude to the US, UK, Russia, ISIS, or whomever, but these characters in a ballet-like dance of combat, removing masks to reveal distorted faces in moments of theatrical posturing, captures our current historical moment better than any 24-hour news program could ever begin to describe. For his work to appear on the walls of Pace Gallery in London to the streets of São Paulo and Copenhagen further enshrines Harrington as not only an artist of reverence, but one who continues to push the envelope of what a fine artist with roots in street art can be.

Juxtapoz ends the 2016 calendar year with an artist in the midst of a significant evolution: Amsterdam-based Parra is getting looser. And more experimental. And making more sculpture work. Long associated with a unique hybrid of both skate and design-culture mixed with humor, we sat down with the Dutchman on the eve of his new solo show, "No Work Today," and talk about his long, extended weekend that he says has been going on for years. Except, you know, he's made a brand and significant art career out of it. 

Juxtapoz kicks off the fall season focusing one some of the best shows and public art projects of 2016, including November 2016 cover artist Ugo Rondinone and his incredible "Seven Magic Mountains" project in the desert outside of Las Vegas. We also look at Danny Lyon's standout exhibition as it travels to the de Young Museum in San Francisco, as well as look at Henry Taylor's upcoming show at Blum and Poe in Los Angeles. 

Juxtapoz also explores Lucy Sparrow's Felt Cave, Alex Gardner's mysterious characters, Aaron Draplin's design universe, Nuart's call for Post Street Art, and art city guide to Minneapolis.

In the spirit of Halloween, the October 2016 issue of Juxtapoz celebrates the artist's ability to wear many influences all in one painting. We start with a cover story on influential NYC-based painter, Nicole Eisenman, fresh off a museum retrospective at the New Museum. She jumps from style to style, mastering a unique combination of comic book pop appeal with a deep, rich tradition of American painting. We also feature the great and influential Diane Arbus, travel to Santa Fe with Robert Williams, make life-sized puppets with Marnie Weber, climb 4-story buildings to paint murals with 2501, eat tacos with Jordan Bogash, and recount the masters with Adam Miller. Oh, and we travel to Gothenburg, Sweden with Ekta.

We celebrate the September 2016 issue with a special showcase of our Juxtapoz x Superflat exhibition happening in Seattle from August 4—7, 2016. Curated by Takashi Murakami and Juxtapoz editor Evan Pricco, the exhibition brings together the blue chip contemporary and emerging art worlds together in one show, and the September issue features Murakami and Pricco discussing the curation of the show and the genesis of how the project came to light. The issue features exclusive looks at new works by Murakami, James Jean, Todd James, Elisabeth Higgins O'Connor, and more. 

The September issue also features an interview with author and artist Dave Eggers, Pop Surreal Queen Camille Rose Garcia, the Nevada Museum of Art, wallpaper designers Flavor Paper, and a city guide to Seattle.
