15th August 1947, was a long time ago. Seven and a half decades is a long period of time but a fleeting and proud moment in the history of nations. The world was different then. India was different then. The Indian economy was different then.

We find ourselves at a remarkable inflection point in global affairs—where the tectonic plates of geopolitics, economic policy, and diplomacy are shifting all at once. As spring unfurls across hemispheres, so too does a new season of statecraft and strategic recalibration.

March has always been a significant month for Diplomatist, as we dedicate it to celebrating the achievements, resilience, and contributions of women across various fields. This year, we took a step further in making this edition more inclusive and representative of the diverse voices shaping our world. We invited nominations from our readers and network to recognise exceptional women who have left a mark in their respective professions, and the response was nothing short of overwhelming. The sheer number of nominations reaffirmed what we have always believed—women continue to redefine boundaries, challenge norms, and lead with vision and determination.

As Donald Trump was sworn in as the 47th President of the United States, he heralded the dawn of a “golden age” for the nation, promising a resurgence of American prosperity, strength, and influence. With this backdrop, the February edition of Diplomatist seeks to explore what President Trump’s return to the Oval Office signifies for the United States, India, and the broader world.

As we begin a new year and a new edition of Diplomatist Magazine, it is an opportune time to reflect on the evolving dynamics of global diplomacy, the role of emerging powers, and the increasingly interconnected world in which we live. 2025 marks a year of immense opportunity, challenges, and changes in international relations, and it is crucial that we, as stakeholders in diplomacy, international policy, and global development, remain attuned to these shifts.

As the sound of Christmas bells fills the air and the countdown to a brand-new year begins, the atmosphere is charged with festive cheer. This is a season of reflection, gratitude, and shared happiness—a time to cherish with loved ones and embrace the spirit of giving.

It’s hard to believe that 28 years have flown by since my late husband, William B. Hawke, and I embarked on the journey of Diplomatist Magazine.  I can still picture us in 1996, inspired by the need to build a publication dedicated to diplomacy in New Delhi’s foreign mission circles. Back then, Delhi was a different place—quieter streets, and fewer faces in the crowd. But the spirit of collaboration and curiosity was alive and thriving. Our first issue, Ubuntu, dedicated to the South African High Commission, marked the beginning of something deeply meaningful. We poured our hearts into that project, and its success fueled our passion to keep moving forward.


As the United States again gears up for a pivotal election, the world is watching with bated breath. In the annals of global diplomacy, certain moments stand out as defining chapters in a nation’s journey on the world stage.

Our cover page stands as a powerful testament to the values of inclusion, attachment, and friendship. Under India’s G20 presidency, we witnessed a historic moment as the African Union was welcomed into the G20 grouping. This achievement speaks volumes about the power of collaboration and the doors that open when nations come together in a spirit of mutual respect and shared goals.

As I present to you the August edition of The Diplomatist, I’m thrilled to delve into a realm of international relations that brims with potential and promise – India’s engagement with Latin America and the Caribbean. This special focus edition unravels the intricate threads that bind two vibrant regions, revealing the depth of diplomatic ties, shared aspirations, and avenues for collaboration.

I am excited to present to you the July Edition of The Diplomatist, filled with compelling insights into international affairs and India’s global outreach. In this edition, we focus on the momentous visit of Prime Minister Modi to the US, which has strengthened the bilateral relations between the two nations.

The Month of May was a busy month in India’s diplomatic calendar. It also saw the completion of 9 Years of the Modi Government. In 2014, Narendra Modi was sworn in for the first time as Prime Minister and then took oath at the office for the second term on May 30, 2019. 

People often ask me; why did you select “Extraordinary & Plenipotentiary Diplomatist” as the name for your journal. Back in 1996, when there was no publication on Diplomacy in the entire Delhi/NCR, I along with my late husband, worked hard to sow the seeds of this astute creation which is now India’s premium publication on diplomacy with an extensive distribution network and high readership.

The 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro was unforgettable for its momentous agreements to direct sustainable development worldwide. The first principle of the 1992 Rio Declaration on Environment and Development states: “Human beings are at the centre of concern for sustainable development.

Take a moment to pat your back and rejoice in how you have progressed over the last year. Whether you have changed jobs, started a new career and worked on your individual marking, growth is growth. 

This is a momentous note for me to write. I have been proud to see how Diplomatist’s coverage has evolved over the past 26 years. But my proudest achievement, looking back at these years is the community we have built. 

With a little over a month until the doors open for our annual Diplomatic Nite, I am filled with overwhelming gratitude and appreciation for all our associates, patrons, subscribers, writers and intellectuals who have spared their valuable time and interest to contribute in so many ways to the magazine and our other initiatives. 

It is with a heavy heart that I am writing you this note today. I felt quite surreal hearing about the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. I immediately turned BBC News on. Death came as a friend, they said, the monarch passed away “peacefully” in Balmoral Castle.
