Controversy Over the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016

After months of peaceful condition prevailing in Assam, there has been some excitement again in Assam, this time following the present Union government’s latest reported insistence to go through with the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 even in spite of stiff opposition to it from almost the whole lot of people in the State. This reaction by them is reminiscent of the recent times when the political situation got charged with periodic agitational programmes by different political parties and several leading organisations such as the AASU, All Assam Krisak Sangram Samity, to note a few, to protest against the Centre’s hasty decision on several vital, concerning issues in the State, like selling out its oil fields through auctions etc., a contentious issue that had of late led to social unrest.

Uncertainty in Meghalaya Political Skyline

The season’s autumn sunshine is on and in contrast the political skyline of the land of clouds, ‘Meghalaya’, is overcast with uncertainty. Like the fickleness weather, the political shift has started, for politicians to fish in troubled waters, seeking opportunities to be one of the contenders, specially of the Khasi-Jaintia elections for the District council, in which sitting members had earlier vacated six seats in Khasi Hills and one in the Jaintia Hills, fear of being suspended as members of the state legislative assembly, as envisaged in the Dual Post Act.

A Narrow Escape

On 24th October 2016, National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN) militants attacked the helipad of the Manipur Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh’s as the chopper landed in the Ukhrul district of Manipur. Chief Minster escaped unscathed after shots were fired at him while he was getting out of his helicopter. The chopper carrying Singh, Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam and the others started from Imphal about 9:30 am. Minutes after the chopper landed at the Bakshi helipad in Ukhrul around 10.30 am firing began towards the Chief Minister. The firing continued for more ten minutes.
