We start our exploration of 'il bel paese' in the beautiful northern region of Piedmont. From elegant, cultured cities to the rural heartland of premium wine production, this is a wonderfully diverse place to visit. Our first stop is at the fragrant lavender fields of Sale San Giovanni near Barolo, known as ‘little Provence’.

Our September issue is all about getting active and making the most of what the outdoors has to offer as we move into autumn – so let’s begin in the Dolomites: famous as a top ski destination, but equally stunning without snow, when it becomes a green and pleasant land with plenty to do for the whole family.

This is the month of Ferragosto, the festival on the 15th of August celebrated throughout Italy, (also in San Marino and the canton of Ticino in Switzerland, fact fans…). This month we embark on our travels to Verona, the beautiful Veneto city immortalised by Shakespeare in his tale of star-crossed lovers. Whether the story of Juliet’s balcony is fact or fiction matters little, as we travel deeper to the city’s heart and its noble Roman heritage. Traditions of another kind are on our mind in Puglia; this time, the culinary variety. It’s a captivating land with its roots firmly in the soil, as you’ll discover. The restful public gardens of Florence are in the spotlight too, while this month’s Fast Culture tells a tale of mistaken identity or Renaissance ‘spin’ that’s not to be missed.
