Our experience defines us. As one of my favourite novelists, the Cantabrian José María de Pereda, says: it doesn’t consist so much of what you have seen, but rather of what you have reflected upon. A timely management of what we have learnt helps us to work in a more efficient way, and to choose excellence. It is learnt by deciphering living, by extracting all the juice, all the essence. This is significative learning and it is more inductive than deductive, basing itself on constructivist principles. We are what we have been and we will be what we are.

LOS FANTASMAS DE LA MEMORIA
Percibir algo es aportar significado a un estímulo. La consciencia humana recibe una imagen con la que elabora una especie de fotografía mental a partir de la que se estructurará el recuerdo de esa vivencia. Esa imagen no es sólo visual, sino que es multisensorial y profundamente compleja, porque es producto de la transformación de algo fugaz en algo más persistente. Nuestro presente incorpora un efecto de barrido sobre nuestro pasado, por lo que en cierto modo cada momento del hoy contiene infinitos momentos del ayer, es un instante de tránsito durante el que se van poco a poco interiorizando recuerdos envueltos de emociones porque cuando se rememora, gran parte de lo invocado se nos muestra como una imagen espectral, fantasmagórica. Casi todo queda distorsionado porque la mente, como el amor, si se les deja, se olvidan.

THE GHOSTS OF MEMORY
Perceiving something is to give meaning to a stimulus. Human consciousness receives an image that it uses to create a kind of mental photography that it will structure as a memory of this lived experience. This image is not only visual, but multi-sensory and profoundly complex: it is the product of a transformation of something fleeting into something more persistent. Our present has a kind of sweeping effect on our past, and so in a way each of today’s moments contains infinite memories from yesterday. It is a moment of transition when memories wrapped in emotions are stored so when they are remembered, a large part of our evocation is shown as a ghostly, phantasmagorical image. Almost everything is distorted because the mind, like love, is forgotten if left alone.

THERE IS MORE THAN WHAT IT SEEMS
As ever, sheltered behind our flag of excellence, the search for which has become the standard of our work, we do not want to turn our back on reality and its most avant-garde forms of representation. As might be expected from any work of art that considers itself as such, there are multiple perceptions of the same experience of objectivity. This is especially easy to see in a society so powerfully under the sway of the magic of virtual reality and its countless manifestations —all of which may be valid— to form part of the territory of imagination and fantasy. There arise forms of expression that compromise the sensorial, that break out with force, shattering the more uptight classical schemes but also safeguard our devotion to beauty and the most exclusive and untransferrable nature of aesthetic experience. 

HAY MÁS DE LO QUE PARECE
Siempre escudados tras el blasón de la excelencia, cuya apasionante búsqueda se ha convertido en todo un estandarte de nuestro hacer, no queremos dar la espalda a la realidad y a sus más vanguardistas formas de representación. Como es de esperar en toda obra de arte que se precie de serlo, coexisten múltiples percepciones sobre una misma experimentación de lo objetivo, algo especialmente fácil de captar dentro de una sociedad poderosamente persuadida por la magia de la realidad virtual y sus innumerables interpretaciones, posiblemente todas ellas válidas, por formar parte del territorio de la imaginación, de la fantasía. Surgen formas de expresión que comprometen lo sensorial, que irrumpen con fuerza resquebrajando los esquemas clásicos más almidonados, pero que salvaguardan la devoción a la belleza y a lo exclusivo e intransferible de la experiencia estética.

CUESTIÓN DE CASTA / A QUESTION OF BREEDING
Nietzsche called man an indeterminate being. While the animal fights for survival in this world, man seeks to transcend it. The delicate interweaving that human urges are made of shelters a large part of our instinctive impulses. We usually resort to our animalistic nature –undeniable, if little-explored– when seeking exoneration for the outbursts of our innate primitivism that demands immediate satisfaction. But man should most enjoy the daily battle, the daily struggle, rather than the end of the fray, the closing of things, for this is where supremacy resides. We should live through art, not from it. We should live emotions, not explain them. Do not argue actions, develop them; and most of all, conclude them. But with no greater desire than to feed the spirit and strengthen your resolve.
I turn to the metaphorical power of the wonderful and elusive rhinoceros; a ‘beautiful’ incarnation of rarity, or duration, of melancholy exile and enigmatic field around its existence throughout time. A fabulous and emblematic icon, the stuff of legends and an animal of worship for its unique extravagance and solitary wanderings, it is the statement of the hegemony of the genuine over the corrupt: abjection shall succumb to the weight of integrity and pedigree.

EL OCASO DE LA BELLEZA EN EL ARTE/THE TWILIGHT OF BEAUTY IN ART?
Art has become banal because society has lost its dignity.
Beauty in art is of no interest. It has to do with nobility and
splendour, with the glorification of reality but it requires
spirituality, knowledge and good taste. Nowadays there
is a preference for the revolting, the scandalous, the uncouth.
We live under the rule of the obscene because it
attracts larger audiences; the populace has become lethargic
with bread and circuses in a society at the mercy
of marketing, where there seems to be no space for the
spiritual heartbeat that art provides to man. A brutal mercantilism
–destructive and lethal for beauty– has taken
hold of so-called contemporary art (it barely deserves the
name), de-humanising it and turning it into an industrial
project. And the saddest thing is the way in which many
people are taking part and buying into such nonsense,
paying homage to the ugly and banal, and falling for the
lies spun by this theatre of mediocrity and the decline in
values. The art that currently leads the market has turned
against itself, railing against its own principles. It has become
perverted.
Fortunately we can spy new clutches of phoenix-artists
who are rising, silent and impending, from the ashes of
an artistic decadence that some (by this I mean quite a
few) of us had dreamt of. The renaissance is composed
of young creators who bring together everything that a
good artist should have: talent, education and discipline in
spades. They have grown up in the midst of the tastelessness
that has impregnated the art scene over the last few
years, but now they are setting trends. We could soon be
speaking of a rebirth…

ARRECIA EL EMPEÑO / THE RESOLVE STRENGTHENS
The current concept of beauty in art, despite not
departing in essence from the classical concept, has
evolved in parallel to the process of ‘complexification’ of
the elements that are involved in the sensory perception
and knowledge. To my knowledge the concept is put
together using pieces of truth that underlie certain
works and not only in their formal component, but
essentially in the symbolic ethereal, impalpable weight
on first sight. Instinct is the only vector that allows us to
sense and feel the essence of beauty, protected by the
enigma that its revelation entails. This type of majestic
proclamation of grandeur that I refer to can be found in
the realm of spiritual freedom and does not understand
speculative positions because it obeys a force majeur
that moves and disturbs in equal measure, both creator
and taster. Beyond the trenches of this firm conviction
our ensign still flies, jealously guarded, sheltered from
the winds by our paladins: activists of good taste, of the
authentic, of the emotive and art that makes us better
people. It is for them, and with them that our publishing
house opens its doors, and with this edition you hold
in your hands, into which we have invested more
effort and enthusiasm than ever before; a new stage
in this great long-distance race with which we face
the decadence and the crisis of principles that have
been plaguing art for years. We have broadened our
scope by making our content accessible in the world’s
two main languages and we have created a powerful
and comprehensive virtual platform to be as prepared
as possible in the brawl for our objective: excellence.
