<p>New figures show 430,000 shoplifting crimes were committed in the year to December. That&rsquo;s a rise of 37% on the previous year.</p>
<p>Nick Stripe of the Office for National Statistics, said: &ldquo;In the past 12 months [shoplifting] has risen by&nbsp;more than 100,000 offences, while the police have been dealing with the highest levels of theft from the person offences recorded in two decades.&rdquo;</p>

<p>Retail trade union Usdaw&rsquo;s latest annual survey showed that 18% of shopworkers suffered a violent attack last year, compared to 8% in 2022. Martyn James, independent consumer champion, added: &ldquo;These crimes aren&rsquo;t as a result of desperate people, they are the work of brazen thieves, who know that their chances of being convicted are minimal. &ldquo;</p>
