FORMER Celtic striker John Hartson has confessed his fear of dementia as he met sufferers to talk about the illness which has hit many former footballers.
He was at Hampden Park in Glasgow ahead of this weekend's Scottish Cup semi-finals to take part in a Football Memories event, to help people with dementia to remember.
In recent years, players including Celtic's Billy McNeill and Scotland defender Gordon McQueen died after being diagnosed with the condition.
A Glasgow University study found ex-footballers are three-and-a-half times more likely to die of neurodegenerative brain disease.
Hartson, who survived testicular cancer that spread to his brain, worries about his own future.
He said: "That was my game, heading the ball for 20 years." Hartson, 49, who lifted the Scottish Cup twice at Celtic, praised the Football Memories event.
He said: "Some of these gentlemen suffer through Alzheimer's and memory loss, and the trophy can bring back great memories as it does for me. It's my favourite trophy." The event came after MSPs voted down a Holyrood Bill to introduce a Scottish Employment Injuries Advisory Council, which would provide support for people living with an injury or disease sustained in the workplace.
