THE UK Government has been urged to investigate why UK car insurance prices have risen by much more than in other European countries.
SNP-commissioned analysis shows the average price of UK insurance has more than doubled since 2015.
This is much higher than other north-west European countries.
The SNP has asked the UK Government to investigate why "to ensure fairness and transparency in the insurance market". House of Commons library analysis showed UK car insurance costs have increased by 102.3 per cent on average since 2015.
This is much higher than Sweden, up by just 8.5 per cent and Spain, up by 18.5 per cent.
Other countries saw car insurance costs fall, including the Republic of Ireland, down 21.1 per cent.
SNP economy spokesperson Drew Hendry has written to the UK's Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Laura Trott.
The MP noted the Association of British Insurers had suggested energy inflation and other incrased costs had driven the rise.
But he added: "The pressing question remains, why are UK drivers subjected to such exorbitant costs compared to our European neighbours?
"Is this a consequence of Brexit or are there other factors at play? "Moreover, what actions is the UK Government taking to address this glaring pricing disparity?"
The UK Government was approached for comment.
