Dark colours and graphic forms combine to create an urban ‘bush lodge’ look in this luxe family home on KwaZulu-Natal’s north coast. The result is serendipitously sexy

Black Magic

The intention was never for this home to be sexy. Nowhere did the word feature in the homeowners’ brief. Nor in the initial consideration of the interiors by designers Bruce Fyfe and Kelsey Boyce, founders of Fyfe Boyce, a Durban-based interior design studio. But sexy it undeniably is, with its dark palette and glamorous urban aesthetic. Unexpected too, given its context: the sub-tropical dunes of KwaZulu-Natal’s Zimbali coastline. “There’s something really sexy about black interiors,” says Kelsey, “and black rules in this house.” Approached by a couple, relocated from Johannesburg and impressed by Fyfe Boyce’s work, the design duo was tasked with overhauling the interiors of the recently purchased home that, while tucked among the dunes and visibly free of neighbours, was by nature dark; atypical of what one expects in a seaside home.
