Self-care matters to me because I perform so much better when my cup is filled and my health isn’t failing. Whether I’m being a leader at work or a mum to my kids, when I’ve taken care of my well-being, I have more to give.
My 2021 turned out as I had imagined: full of unknowns, but also full of strong individuals pushing forward together. It was amazing to recognise the strength of those around you when push comes to shove.
A low point of 2021 was a health scare in the early part of the year. I realised that even though I looked healthy, an annual full body review is important to know how your health is doing. I changed my diet and got discharged by my specialist a few months later. It’s always wise to take charge of your health. Meanwhile, some high points include riding through the storms at work with the team and smashing targets together.
My approach to self-care last year was to start the day with a thankful mindset, and commit the day's weight to God by saying a short prayer and recognising that He is in control. This has helped me focus on things that matter, and start the day on a better note. I also made a list of things to start the mornings with, like taking my probiotics, drinking water, and eating a healthy breakfast.
A main strategy I adopted in 2021 was to set an intention, no matter how casual the event or encounter is; to uplift others the same way others have uplifted me; and to be more conscientious in leading a balanced life with regards to diet and work. There have been times when my body broke down. Now, I acknowledge that nothing is more important than taking care of yourself.
