ESA CONFIRMS RARE INTERSTELLAR VISITOR ZOOMS THROUGH SOLAR SYSTEM

The European Space Agency (ESA) has confirmed that a newly discovered object, initially dubbed A11pl3Z and now officially named 3I/ATLAS or C/2025 N1, is the third known interstellar visitor to our solar system.

ESA CONFIRMS RARE INTERSTELLAR VISITOR ZOOMS THROUGH SOLAR SYSTEM

A COSMIC GUEST NAMED 3I/ATLAS

Spotted by NASA’s Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) between June 25 and 29, the comet is hurtling toward the sun at 152,000 miles per hour, with a hyperbolic orbit that suggests it originated beyond our stellar neighborhood. The discovery, announced on social media by ESA’s Operations account, has sparked excitement among astronomers racing to study this fleeting cosmic traveler.

The comet, roughly 6 to 12 miles wide, is currently near Jupiter’s orbit, about 3.8 astronomical units (AU) from Earth—one AU being the Earth-sun distance of 93 million miles. Its path will bring it closest to Mars on October 3 at 0.2 AU and to the sun on October 29 at 1.35 AU, before passing Earth on October 30 at 160 million miles, posing no threat. Unlike the cigar-shaped ‘Oumuamua in 2017 or the icy 2I/Borisov in 2019, 3I/ATLAS boasts a high eccentricity of 6 to 10.4, indicating a nearly straight trajectory that barely bends around the sun, cementing its interstellar origin.

imageAstronomers, including citizen scientist Sam Deen, have traced its path using archival ATLAS data from mid-June, with over 100 observations logged globally. The comet’s faint magnitude of 18.8 makes it a target for large telescopes, with a livestream planned by the Virtual Telescope Project. This rare visitor offers a chance to study material from another star system, but its speed and brief visibility window challenge researchers to act fast.
