Held on Sunday night in Los Angeles, the event saw all four acting categories won by first-time nominees. All, however, are industry veterans, causing many to shed happy tears.
Here are five highlights from the show.
1 Halle makes history with Michelle Yeoh
One of the biggest moments of the night was seeing Ipoh-born star Michelle Yeoh take home the Best Actress trophy for her role in the multiverse adventure movie Everything Everywhere All At Once. The 60-year-old is the first Asian woman to win in the category and only the second woman of colour to achieve the feat.
The first to do so was Halle Berry, who was presenting the award to Yeoh alongside 2022's Best Actress winner Jessica Chastain.
Berry, 56, who won in 2002 for Monster's Ball, waited for 21 years before another woman of colour joined her ranks. She was visibly emotional when Yeoh walked onstage to collect her win.
The Best Actress category is typically presented by the previous year's Best Actor winner, but Smith - who won for King Richard (2021) in 2022 - has been banned from the Academy's events for 10 years following his assault on Rock. As such, Berry and Chastain presented the awards for Best Actor and Best Actress.
