China's PVC dumping is hurting India

With global trade tensions escalating, China's industrial overdrive is generating a surplus that the world cannot absorb. As one of the fastest-growing economies, India is facing the brunt of the dumping from China.

- Jaijit Bhattacharya and Manojdinne

According to research conducted by the Centre for Domestic Economy Policy Research (C-DEP.in), China is expected to produce approximately 31.4 million tonnes of PVC this year, exceeding its domestic requirement of only 21.8 million tonnes. That leaves a surplus of 9.6 million tonnes, material subsidised, discounted, and which seems to be aggressively shipped abroad.

DGTR's (investigating body under the Ministry of Commerce) initial probe shows that Chinese PVC is being dumped in India at 50-60 per cent below its fair price. Put simply, PVC(s) that would cost Rs 100 in China are landing in India for just Rs40-50. This practice is followed with the singular purpose of destroying the destination country's domestic capacities and turning them into an import-dependent market.
