Low-lying areas across Harangi Reservoir, Cauvery face flood threat as water levels rise

FACING flooded farmlands, broken houses, gushing rivers and absence of electricity, Kodagu is battling incessant rainfall for the past three days. Several low-lying areas face flood threats even as notices are being issued to residents to shift to safer places.

Over 20,000 cusecs of water is being let out from Harangi Reservoir following heavy rainfall in catchment areas. The district recorded an average rainfall of 89.11 mm rainfall in 24 hours ending on Sunday morning.

Heavy and continuous rainfall with gusty winds has affected normalcy across the district even as several roads were blocked after huge trees were uprooted. Several transformers have been damaged even as numerous electric poles have been uprooted affecting power supply across the district.

The catchment areas of Cauvery river received heavy downpour as inflow to the Harangi Reservoir increased to 17,878 cusecs. Over 20,800 cusecs of water is being released to the river from the reservoir.
