SPECIAL Constables – volunteer officers who have the same powers as regular police – are to be offered Tasers to help protect them and the public, the Home Secretary has announced.
Priti Patel made the pledge at the annual conference of the Police Federation, which represents rank and file officers across England and Wales.
The conference, which is being held this week in Manchester, saw her give approval for Specials to carry a Taser – if Chief Officers authorise it.
The Home Office has said that Specials who volunteer and are selected will be given the same Taser training and access to equipment as their paid colleagues, so they are “not at a disadvantage when facing an attacker wielding a knife or a marauding terrorist, for example”.
