Trump infuriates anti-abortion lobby by rejecting national ban

The former president's announcement, after months of wavering, dashed the hopes of anti-abortion groups that he would call for a federal limit on abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy.

Democrats immediately seized on the statement to accuse Trump of backing "extreme" state abortion laws, some of which impose outright bans on the procedure and offer no exceptions for rape, incest or when the life of the mother is at risk.

Trump's announcement had been highly anticipated both by Democrats who believe the fight over abortion rights helps them at the polls, and Republicans who failed to push Trump to endorse a national abortion ban during their party's primary.
