Sydney 'fortune-teller' arrested over alleged £35m fraud syndicate

A self-proclaimed fortuneteller and feng shui master who allegedly ran a highly sophisticated A$70m (£35m) money-laundering syndicate across Sydney has been charged.
New South Wales police arrested two women, Anya Phan, 53, and her daughter, Thi Ta, 25, in Sydney on Wednesday.
Phan allegedly exploited vulnerable clients within the Vietnamese community by persuading them to take out loans based on her prediction that a “billionaire” would enter their future. She then took a share of the loans, police alleged yesterday.
Police reportedly seized financial documents, mobile phones, electronics, luxury handbags, a 40g gold bar worth A$10,000 and A$6,600 in casino chips.
Investigators will allege that Phan ran the fraudulent scheme estimated to total nearly A$70m - with the help of her daughter.
An additional A$15m of assets was frozen by the New South Wales crime commission, police said.
Det Supt Gordon Arbinja, of the financial crimes squad, said Phan had preyed upon people in hardship.
