Studios offering "puppy yoga" classes across Italy have been called to heel, after the use of puppies was banned on health and welfare grounds.

'It's exploitation' - Italy bans puppy yoga after welfare row

The country's health ministry said only adult dogs could be used for "animal assisted" wellbeing activities, including yoga. The department said it had been made aware of organisations that would "directly contact dog breeders" to temporarily use puppies for sessions.

Animal rights groups had called for a clampdown after media reports revealed alleged mistreatment. Piera Rosati, president of the non-profit LNDC Animal Protection, said the puppies were being exploited.
