From Johar's student of year to smuggler of year

A 32-year-old Hindi film actor, identified as Vishal Brahma from Assam, was arrested by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence at Chennai airport on Monday following the seizure of four kilograms of methaqualone valued at about ₹40 crore.

Brahma had modest acting credits before this, including a supporting role in the 2019 Karan Johar production Student of the Year 2. Media reports suggest he was struggling with mounting debts and that some acquaintances in Delhi introduced him to the Nigerian traffickers.

Investigators say Brahma was allegedly recruited by a Nigerian syndicate based in Delhi, which offered him an all-expenses-paid trip to Cambodia with the condition that he would smuggle drugs back to India. He had flown from Cambodia via Singapore and landed in Chennai on Air India flight AI 347, where officers intercepted him before he could board further transport.
