Streaming: Viewers Can Use Two Devices

MultiChoice has reversed its decision to limit streaming on its DStv Stream app to a single device at a time. Effective immediately, late last week, subscribers on higher-end packages are now able to stream on two concurrent devices simultaneously, including smart TVs. It said this was in response to "changing viewing habits" where "more families now stream individually on personal devices".

This effectively reverts to the original limit that was in place until March 2022, when it picked the nuclear option to ostensibly crack down on password sharing.

By that point, it was clear to pretty much everyone that subscriptions were being actively "shared" across households so they could watch major live sporting events, for example, alongside its catalogue of on-demand content.

The move to restrict concurrent streaming was seen as a last-ditch effort to try shore up its Premium, Compact Plus and Compact subscriber bases across affluent middle-income households.
