Difficult and dangerous East London a thrill of note

Having gone a year without a wet race, it was only expected that, at some stage, a round of the Toyota GR Cup would be held in greasy conditions.

The fact that it would happen at the fastest track in South Africa in East London added further concern to a circuit none of us wanted to think about. Cars easily veer off the historic track at 200km/h in dry conditions.

In sunny but typically blustery coastal conditions during the first practice session on Friday I had decided not to risk the temptation of taking the infamous Potter's Pass flat-out.

I managed to improve by two seconds in the second session and while my times did not go lower in the late afternoon, I was confident for Saturday morning qualifying.

But overnight rain had drenched the circuit, made worse by a broken feeder line to the city's main reservoir that pumped water onto the circuit.
