2,800-Year-old mass grave of women and children in Serbia reveals deliberate early Iron Age violence

The find, at the Gomolava site near present-day Hrtkovci, challenges traditional understandings of Early Iron Age European violence and suggests deliberate, large-scale killings of vulnerable populations during a period of social upheaval in the Carpathian Basin.

Researchers published their findings on February 23, 2026, in the prestigious journal Nature Human Behaviour, alongside the Live Science report by Kristina Killgrove, which offers comprehensive insights into the context, demographics, and forensic evidence of the site.

The Gomolava archaeological site sits in northern Serbia along the Sava River. It was initially established in the sixth millennium B.C. and, over millennia, was repeatedly occupied and used by various cultural groups both settled and mobile. By the ninth century B.C., the region had become a dynamic intersection in the Carpathian Basin, where demographic shifts and competing notions of land use and ownership created significant social tension.

According to the researchers, this period was marked by population movements, territorial competition, and emerging power structures conditions that likely contributed to the violent episode represented by the Gomolava mass burial.

The mass grave itself is a compact pit approximately 9.5 feet (2.9 meters) in diameter and 1.6 feet (0.5 meters) deep. Archaeologists observed postholes around the burial pit, suggesting that the structure was not a casual dumping place but part of a deliberate burial perhaps commemorative or symbolic.

Alongside the human remains, researchers found ceramic vessels, small bronze accessories, and the bones of nearly 100 animals, including the complete skeleton of a young cow placed at the very bottom of the grave. This combination of ritual elements and grave goods indicates complex burial behavior rather than simple discarding of the dead.
