The 10 November suicide bombing in the heart of Delhi has raised concerns about public safety in crowded hubs across India. While agencies pursue the perpetrators, police are sharpening their ability to detect security gaps, and fortify defences. Mint looks at the measures.
How did explosives go undetected?
The improvised explosive device (IED) used in the Delhi Red Fort blast has been reported to be a mix of ammonium nitrate, car fuel, and a highly unstable substance with a chemical nomenclature of triacetone triperoxide (TATP). A key challenge in spotting TATP is that it can slip past standard metal and object-detection systems currently in use, said Atul Rai, chief executive of AI-led video analytics firm Staqu Technologies. He said that while safety monitoring relies on intelligence inputs, some potentially dangerous objects can still bypass the existing systems despite regular monitoring and upgrades.
