Ashir Shahid, of Windsor Road, Walton-le-Dale, previously pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving at a hearing in June.

'The joy of family, the joy of friends, the sheer joy of life, all of it gone'

On the same day his brother Sam, of the same address, pleaded guilty to assisting an offender.

At yesterday’s sentencing hearing, Jonathan Duffy, for Ashir, said the initial response came from shock and not fully appreciating the extent of the injuries caused to the woman. He asked for credit for the guilty pleas and pointed out that his client had no previous convictions.

Jennifer Devans-Tamakloe, defending Sam, asked for his young age to be taken into consideration, explaining he had just turned 16 at the time of the offence. She argued his actions in the immediate aftermath were “shaped by immediate panic”.

Having seen a look of panic flash across my face as my milestone birthday celebrations began, my darling sister-in-law gently informed me that 'turning 60 is a privilege.' Which, I now understand, is a more polite way of saying 'well, at least you're not dead.'
