Iconic Irish writer Shaw dies

Playwright won Nobel and Oscar

TOMORROW marks 75 years since the death of famed Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw.

He is the only person to have won both a Nobel Prize (for Literature in 1925) and an Oscar (for the screenplay of his play Pygmalion in 1938).

Born in Portobello, Dublin, in 1856, he began work aged 15 as a junior clerk in an estate agency at a salary of IR£18 a year. He later described the work as a “damnable waste of human life”.
