The tech-focussed proposals were peppered across various disparate domains such as agriculture, academia, education and law, but together seemed to tie in with the government’s larger Digital India approach.
“Our vision for the Amrit Kaal includes technology-driven and knowledge-based economy with strong public finances, and a robust financial sector,” Sitharaman said.
Among the tech-related steps was what the minister described as the steps to fulfil the vision of Make AI in India’ and Make AI Work for India” by setting up three centres of excellence in educational institutes.
“Leading industry players will partner in conducting interdisciplinary research, develop cutting-edge applications and
scalable problem solutions in the areas of agriculture, health, and sustainable cities. This will galvanise an effective AI ecosystem and nurture quality human resources in the field,” the minister said during her 1 hour, 26-minute speech in Lok Sabha.
A second future technology focus was on 5G. Sitharaman said the government plants to set up 100 labs in engineering institutions for developing applications that can run on 5G, or fifth generation high speed mobile networks.
