CAA set to be ahead of LS elections: Shah implemented

The rules for the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), 2019 will soon be notified and the legislation will be implemented before the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, Union home minister Amit Shah said in New Delhi on Saturday.

Passed by Parliament in December 2019, the act seeks to grant Indian citizenship to “persecuted minorities” belonging to Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Buddhist, Parsi and Christian communities from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan who entered India on or before December 31, 2014. The rules for its implementation are yet to be notified. Since 2020, the home ministry has taken extensions from the parliamentary committee at regular intervals to frame the rules. “The CAA is an act of the country.
