BJP, TMC trade barbs after Bengal villagers assault sadhus; 12 held

A political row erupted in West Bengal on Saturday, days after three Hindu sadhus (monks) were assaulted by a group of villagers in Purulia district suspecting them to be "kidnappers", with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) blaming the "appeasement" politics of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), and the ruling party accusing the opposition of giving a "communal twist" to the incident.

According to the police, 12 people have been arrested in connection with the incident, which took place at Gourangdih village in Kashipur block on Thursday, when the Hindu monks from Uttar Pradesh were on their way to Gangasagar pilgrimage ahead of Makar Sankranti.
"Five people, including the three sadhus were travelling in a vehicle on January 11 afternoon. They stopped at a village, Gourangdih. They saw three local girls and asked them something. There was some misunderstanding because of the language problem and the girls got scared and started shouting. A group of local villagers gathered and manhandled the sadhus," Purulia superintendent of police (SP) Avijit Banerjee said.
