Gavai to take oath as 52nd CJI today

Justice BR Gavai will take oath as the 52nd Chief Justice of India (CJI) on Wednesday, making him the first Buddhist to head the country’s judiciary.

President Droupadi Murmu will administer the oath of office to Justice Gavai, who succeeds former CJI Sanjiv Khanna.
Sanjiv Khanna retired on Tuesday, marking the end of his tenure as the 51st Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.
He assumed office on Nov.10, 2024, and retired after serving in the apex position for six months.
Justice Khanna has formally recommended Gavai as his successor.
