But Harry Bushnell, who guided Raducanu from the age of six to 10 at the Parklangley Club in Beckenham, said she had always been a "special" talent.
He said: "I feel immense pride. Among all athletes, the chances of making it are minute. It's very satisfying knowing you played a part. I speak for all of her coaches.
"Emma's always had that ability to dig deep. There were times when she was younger where she would find a way to come back from anything and win."
