Nigel Booth's brush with making of gangster culture

One of the highest grossing movies in cinema history and winner of multiple academy awards, The Godfather was a revelation upon its release in the UK in August 1972.

No-one had seen a movie like this before. And now a drama based on the tortuous journey towards the making of this iconic film is being shown in its entirety as a boxset on ITVX.

Rooted in 1960s and 70s hedonistic excess in the film industry, it shows just how close to not being made the movie was.

Based on the Mario Puzo novel, The Godfather was fraught with seemingly insurmountable obstacles, from casting to directing and run-ins with the Mafioso, who saw the film as a poor reflection on and disrespect for Italian-Americans.

The series The Offer received mixed reviews upon release in 2022, but try to get past the first couple of episodes and it does get better and draws you in.

The series follows Rand Corporation employee Albert S Ruddy who meets Sergeant Bilko actor Bernard Fein at a soiree in Tinseltown.

They bond over a love of comedy and the unlikely pair successfully pitch the sitcom
