Shared housing move on 'HMO road' blasted

CRITICISM DESPITE APPLICANT'S CLAIM AIM WAS NOT TO DISRUPT STREET BUT ENHANCE IT

- By NIGEL SLATER

A DECISION to allow a Derby family home to be turned into shared housing on a street dubbed “HMO road” has been slammed.

Residents have been calling for greater protection on Brighton Road in Alvaston to limit the number of HMOs (Houses of Multiple Occupation) granted there.

The campaign started more than two years ago amid claims the road was “losing its character”.

The campaign claimed Brighton Road was turning into “HMO Road” with family homes disappearing into rooms for individuals.

Residents have previously told Derby councillors this was creating huge parking problems.

Earlier this year Derby City Council enforced new ‘Article 4’ planning powers following a review into HMO housing across the city after concerns were raised by councillors and a campaign by city resident Sassi Stark.
