Man gets life for Irish backpacker's murder

THE mother of an Irish backpacker raped and murdered in India said she could now grieve for her daughter as her killer was jailed for life yesterday.

Danielle McLaughlin, 28, was found dead in a field in Goa in March 2017.

Her mother, Andrea Brannigan, flew to India before local man Vikat Bhagat, 31, was found guilty on Friday.

She told of her relief at the conclusion of the "eight-year murder trial".

Andrea said: "I've constantly been trying to fight to get justice because Danielle deserved justice so she could finally rest in peace and us as her family and friends can finally grieve."
