The makers of BBC1's new adaptation of Great Expectations, which began last night, had played a blinder when they cast Olivia Colman as the broken and bitter Miss Havisham, one of Dickens' most damaged characters.
Colman has always played "damaged" with such aplomb.
Pale, haunted, frozen in time, her every waking hour spent in a room described as "eternal winter", a convincing Miss Havisham needs to tick several boxes.
Naturally, she needs to be creepy and disturbing. And while the viewer has yet to discover precisely what role she has in mind for anxious young blacksmith's boy Pip (Tom Sweet), summoned to meet her and her adopted daughter Estella (Chloe Lea) at the vast and chilling Satis House, she needs to have us fearing that her motives will be twisted and cruel.
