David Ballantyne Smith, 58, was reeled in after UK security learned he sent a letter in 2020 to military staff at the Russian Embassy in Berlin.
The first undercover role-player purported to be a Russian informant called "Dmitry" who walked into the British Embassy when Smith was there.
The ex-RAF serviceman, from Paisley, Renfrewshire, was tasked with escorting Dmitry inside on August 5 2021 and copying a document he'd brought.
