BURTON Albion Women opened their West Midlands Regional League season with a 1-0 defeat at home to Shifnal Town.

Women beaten by solitary goal in their opening league match

The result, settled by a second-half strike from Jenna Boddison, left coach Amber-Leigh Denny, starting her second season at the helm, feeling hard done by.

“We're devastated to be honest,” she said.

“I felt like a draw would have been more of a fair result.

“We just switched off for a split moment in the second half and that's cost us the game - but we will learn from it.”

Emily Gillott, captaining the side for the first time, believes she can already feel an improvement from last season, despite the result.

“You could really see what we've been working on in training and we look so much more organised compared to last year,” she said.

“It was just one little moment where we switched off and a team like that is always going to take advantage.

“It felt natural for me coming into the role and I'm very proud of it.
