JORBEER, NEAR BIKANER, IS A WINTER HOME TO BIRDS OF PREY

- BY SANJAY AHLAWAT

RAPTORS FORT

Bikaner beckons tourists with its majestic forts and havelis, the Bikaneri bhujia and the iconic Bikaneri camel. But the desert city in Rajasthan is now seeing wildlife enthusiasts from around the world. The reason: vultures and other raptors (birds of prey) fly in every year, making Jorbeer—a conservation reserve located 12km from Bikaner—their winter home. This extraordinary site has become a favourite haunt of ornithologists, photographers and birdwatchers alike, thanks to the efforts of residents like Jitendra Solanki aka Dr Jitu, 44, who did his PhD on snakes but ended up working for the conservation of these birds. He has been visiting Jorbeer since childhood and knows the terrain better than most forest officials. “Jor’ means connected and ‘beer’ means forest, so Jorbeer is a unique desert forest connected to the city,” he explains. Spanning 56.26sqkm, Jorbeer was officially declared a conservation reserve for vultures in 2009. Historically, Jorbeer has been a dedicated site for skinning animal carcasses. The practice was initiated by Maharaja Ganga Singh (1888-1943) of Bikaner, which was once home to large herds of camels and produced high-quality leather goods such as bags, belts, shoes and jootis. These carcasses attract thousands of vultures and other raptors.

Duties on board

As we stand at the crossroads of unprecedented change within the corporate governance landscape, the significance of the board of directors has never been more pronounced. This esteemed body not only commands respect, awe and admiration, but also serves as a beacon of aspiration for many within the corporate world. The board acts as the guardians of the organisation, ensuring its efficient operation and financial stability. Their responsibilities extend beyond mere oversight and they prioritise the interests of shareholders, while also considering a broader spectrum of stakeholders. In doing so, the board plays a crucial role in fostering trust and accountability within the corporate structure.

Conglomerate investing: Smart risk diversification in volatile markets

INVESTING IN THE markets has been challenging in the past one year and more so in recent months. While local cues in terms of GDP growth, indirect tax reforms and lower inflation have been supportive, global factors and their impact on the economy and corporate earnings appear adverse.

Whistleblowers are not troublemakers

While the Right to Information Act has empowered citizens, it has also put the lives of those who dare to use it in danger ('Right gone wrong, October 12). As India marks two decades of the RTI Act, she must confront a grim truth-more than 100 activists have been killed and meaningful protection for whistleblowers remains out of reach. The law must evolve beyond granting access to information. It must provide real safeguards for those who expose corruption.
