SHWESHWE

Tightly patterned, generally geometric, and often referred to as the "denim of South Africa" – shweshwe is instantly recognisable. This 100% cotton fabric has a history stretching back centuries and is traditionally used to make dresses, skirts, aprons and wraparound clothing. More recently, it's been translated into interior design. Its dense patterns and vibrant colours make it a standout choice for accents – think scatter cushions, table runners, place mats or lamp shades. When used sparingly, it adds visual interest that offsets more neutral tones without overwhelming a space. Crafted from lightweight cotton, shweshwe is best used in soft furnishings that don't endure heavy wear and tear – not ideal for a high-traffic couch – but it works beautifully in curtains, ottomans or throws. The fabric also holds personal and cultural significance, making it a meaningful material to incorporate into homes that value storytelling and are rooted in heritage design.
