WHENEVER TOYOTA UPDATES ITS FORTUNER
(OR HILUX) THEY DO IT IN A WAY THAT'S MORE EVOLUTIONARY THAN REVOLUTIONARY, AND THEY HAVE A POINT. Since its introduction in 2006, the Fortuner has garnered more than 40% market share in its segment, making it one of South Africa's most loved 4x4s.
The newest version recently received a facelift, making it look like a proper big brother to the shapely Corolla Cross. The front bumper is new, as are the revised air intakes, the front protection plate, mesh grille and sharply angular front-end treatment. The most obvious changes are the smaller new headlights (Bi-LED in the premium VX) and new 18-inch alloy wheels. An optional (R10 700) two-tone exterior finish is now offered, but traditionalists know the most appropriate Fortuner paint job is white.
Inside, little has changed but a new dual-tone leather upholstery finish does lend a bit of flair. The engine line-up has also stayed the same with two 4cyl. turbo diesel powerplants; the 2.4-1. and 2.8-1. in the top spec VX version, which I am currently driving.
