How staying active builds cognitive resilience in later life
-
Anti-ageing is often framed in terms of wrinkle creams, dietary supplements, or even cosmetic surgery - all aimed at masking the visible signs of getting older.
But one of the most powerful and perhaps overlooked tools for healthy ageing isn't found in a bottle – it could lie in your gym routine. More specifically, how regularly you move your body can play a key role in helping to keep your brain sharp and resilient as the years pass.
The benefits might not be visible in the mirror, but they could be quietly shaping how well you think, focus, and adapt with age.
New research from the University of Birmingham suggests that regular physical activity doesn't just keep your joints supple and muscles strong, it also builds “cognitive resilience”, a term referring to your brain’s ability to stay focused, adaptive, and mentally agile even when tired or stressed – an especially critical asset as we age.
With age, our brains naturally slow down. Multitasking becomes harder. Our short-term memory might get patchy. The afternoon slump can hit a little harder. This isn’t just getting older – it's mental fatigue, and it becomes more pronounced with age due to structural and chemical changes in the brain.
But the encouraging news is that lifestyle choices, particularly exercise, can slow, or even partially reverse, these effects.
What is cognitive fatigue?Cognitive fatigue is more than just feeling tired after a long day – it’s the reduced ability to concentrate, process information, or adapt to challenges in the wake of sustained mental effort. While this might sound like something that only affects us in old age, emerging research suggests these changes can begin much earlier than many people realise – potentially in our mid-40s.
