Steve and Val Bradley explain how to tackle tricky tree stumps

Removing a tree stump

WHEN a tree needs removing, especially a big one, you can be left with a hefty stump to get rid of. Where it can be pulled or ground out, getting rid of at least part of it is easier, but if you are unable to use a stump grinder, due to access or close proximity of a building or other structure, you can be left with a long-term problem.

When digging isn’t possible
There are times when removing a stump by digging it out is not feasible; near a path or where there is limited access. Burning is out of the question in most areas, due to location or local authority regulations regarding fires and bonfires.

Speed up rotting process
Letting it rot naturally takes time, sometimes years if it is a hardwood, but you can speed up the decaying process until that wood crumbles away and the rotted stump can either be left to break down completely or it can be broken up and removed.
