THE GUCCI BAMBOO 1947
Harper's BAZAAR Singapore
|March 2025
A single stroke of inspiration transformed bamboo into an icon, redefining the language of luxury.
Florence, 1947. Post-war rationing meant leather was scarce, and luxury houses had two choices: innovate or fade. For Guccio Gucci and his team of Florentine artisans, inspiration arrived in the form of Vasco Gucci, his fifth son, who had a collection of bamboo walking sticks. Bamboo, imported from Japan, was lightweight, incredibly strong and crucially, available.
The original Bamboo bag, then known only by its product number 0633, was born. A structured top-handle bag with a leather body, its now-iconic curved handle flame-scorched to achieve a rich patina. More than just a grip, the bamboo also functioned as a turn-lock closure. Its natural nodes were a juxtaposition to the bag's precise saddle-like construction, a quiet homage to Gucci's equestrian heritage.
A LIST OF LOVERSIt wasn't long before the bag became a staple among the world's most influential women and was ready for its cinematic cameos.
Ingrid Bergman carried hers in Viaggio in Italia (1954); Eleonora Rossi Drago was seen with one in Michelangelo Antonioni's Le Amiche (1955), and Vanessa Redgrave's appeared in Blow-Up (1966).
Princess Paola of Belgium was frequently photographed with hers in the '60s, while Elizabeth Taylor rehearsed for Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958) with a Gucci Bamboo by her side.Bu hikaye Harper's BAZAAR Singapore dergisinin March 2025 baskısından alınmıştır.
